ODDS ANALYSIS

The odds at BookMaker opened with Klitschko as a -125 favorite, with Fury at -105. The fact that they’re now both at -110 signifies that most of the early action has been coming in on Fury. We still don’t have an over/under yet, but I’d expect it to start at 10.5 rounds for this 12-rounder, with the over as the more expensive play.

CAN LIGHTNING STRIKE TWICE?

For context, Klitschko was a -500 favorite in the first matchup. Fury closed around +375 going into the bout. Almost nobody picked Fury to win, which was to be expected given how Klitschko had dominated the heavyweight division for years. It’s not like Fury had beaten anyone on the Ukrainian’s level either.

But Fury was able to pull off a major upset, but many feel it was due to an off-night from Wladimir rather than the skills of the brash Brit. With Klitschko invoking his immediate rematch clause, Fury has the chance to prove that the victory was no fluke.

On one hand, you can argue that Fury’s size and activity gave Klitschko problems. The former champion has typically enjoyed a distinct height advantage against opponents, but him and Fury stand eye-to-eye. Fury is not a particularly powerful puncher, so he had to resort to every other trick in the book to flummox Klitschko.

And it worked. Klitschko was unusually gunshy, and restricted just 52 punches over twelve rounds. Two judges gave the fight to Fury by three rounds, and the third by four rounds. Klitschko’s legendary jab went MIA, and his right hand remained cocked for most of the fight.

It’s difficult to see such an accomplished fighter put on another performance like that again. Klitschko’s older brother, Vitali, agrees. “Frankly, I was very surprised with Wladimir’s loss, because I didn’t believe Tyson Fury was the kind of athlete who could provide a lot of resistance against Wladimir.”

“But there are days when the speed is not present, and there is no power. And I told him…’Wladimir, what happened to you? I didn’t recognize you.’ That was probably not his day.”

THE EARLY PLAYS

My gut reaction is that you’ll never get a money line this good on Klitschko again. So if you’re convinced that Fury’s win was a fluke, you should jump on Wlad right now while he’s at -110. I expect his money line to slide into chalk territory as we get closer to the fight.
