With 16 teams competing in the first round of the 2024 NBA playoffs we?re presented a light schedule on Wednesday, April 24 with only two games to build a winning NBA parlay. That might not be a bad thing since we missed a four-teamer on the final day of the regular season. At least we will have the top teams in each conference hosting games with the Boston Celtics and Oklahoma City Thunder taking center stage. One game doesn?t make a series but the Celtics took the upperhand on the Miami Heat winning Game 1, 114-94, covering the 14.5-point spread.

OKC ended a three-year playoff drought in grand style finishing as the No. 1 seed in the Western Conference with 57 wins. It was their highest win total since 2012-13 when they reached the conference championship for the fourth straight season. They do lack playoff experience with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Lou Dort remaining from the 2019-20 club that lost in the first round. The Thunder enjoyed success against New Orleans winning four of the previous five meetings entering the postseason while going 4-1 ATS.

I built some momentum heading into the postseason by hitting three of four picks on my season-ending NBA parlay. It was still a loser, though, since the Bulls and Knicks had an offensive outburst going over the total by 21 points. They actually hit the total of 218 in regulation when the Knicks scored 33 points in the fourth. That was the only blemish on the card with Philadelphia and Sacramento each winning on the line and the Lakers-Pelicans matchup going OVER the closing total.

The options for Wednesday are limited, but I do like the Celtics at home to win handily. Boston built a big lead through three quarters in Game 1 and won by 20 even though they were outscored 35-23 in the fourth quarter. And they showed they can win when not relying on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. Those guys did their thing combing for 40 points and Kristaps Porzingis had 18 points on 4 of 8 three-point shooting, but Derrick White was the X-factor. White made 6 of 10 shots for 20 points and was team-best plus-24.

Miami plays hard and Erik Spoelstra will have his troops ready. However, it?s hard to win when you bring a knife to a gunfight. The loss of Jimmy Butler in the play-in tournament severely hampered the Heat?s chances and the Celtics don?t want to give Miami any ideas of pulling off another upset by choking at home. I?ll back the Celtics despite the hefty NBA point spread. On the same game parlay I?m also backing the OVER. Boston scored 114 points in spite of Tatum?s poor shooting. Tatum was 7 of 18 overall and just 1 of 8 from distance. I expect he?ll pick up the scoring to exceed a relatively low total.

A key injury will impact the Pelicans in the playoffs. Zion Williamson is out indefinitely after tweaking a hamstring in the play-in loss to the Lakers. He led the Pels averaging 22.9 points during the season. The bulk of the offense will come from Brandon Ingram, who missed time due to injury near the end of the season, and C.J. McCollum. It will be tough to score against one of the better defensive teams in the NBA and even more difficult without Williamson. Now that they have a game under them the Thunder can relax, which is bad for the Pels, and cover the line while playing below the total.

2024 NBA Eastern Conference Playoff Preview - NBA Betting

The Boston Celtics were the preseason favorite to win the NBA championship and they looked the part during the year posting a 64-17 record. It?s their most wins since 2007-08 when they tallied 66 victories and won their 17th NBA title. Winning that record 18th title has proven elusive, though, and this team will be remembered for how it fares in the playoffs. The Celtics reached the Eastern Conference Final in five of the previous seven years and advanced to the championship series just once. The No. 2 seed last year, the Celtics were upset by the Miami Heat in the ECF. Boston has a more balanced roster and is a negative odds favorite to win the East.

While the Celtics were running away from their East opponents, the fun took place below them in the standings. The second-seeded New York Knicks had only three more wins than the play-in tournament bound Philadelphia 76ers. They missed out on avoiding the play-in, but the Sixers could surprise some folks now that Joel Embiid has returned. Miami emerged from the play-in tournament to win the East last year upsetting top-seed Milwaukee in the first round. The precedent has been set with the Heat boasting shorter odds than top six teams Orlando and Indiana.

In a move designed to help Jaylen Brown and Jaysom Tatum, the Celtics acquired Kristaps Porzingis during the offseason. Porzingis is a unique talent with size to plug the middle and three-point range. His skill set allowed more freedom on the floor and as a result the Celtics had a potent offense averaging the second-most points with 120.6 while owning the best rating. Three players averaged more than 20 points led by Tatum at 26.9. Brown chipped in 23.0 and Porzingis had 20.1. Depth was considered an issue but the Celtics got major contributions from Al Horford, Payton Pritchard and Sam Hauser off the bench.

With the second shortest odds to win the East, the Milwaukee Bucks enter the postseason with plenty of questions. First, is Giannis Antetokounmpo healthy enough to be a factor? The Freak missed the final week of the season with a calf injury and the time off before the first round will help. And while the Bucks improved defensively under Doc Rivers, they went just 17-19 since his debut. Milwaukee does have the most star power of any challenger to Boston with Giannis, Damian Lillard and Khris Middleton among others.

The Philadelphia 76ers boast potential as a threat now that Joel Embiid has returned. Last season?s MVP missed two months with a knee injury costing them a higher seed. An eight-game winning streak to close the regular season coincided with Embiid?s return. He played in five of those games averaging 30.4 points and makes his teammates better. For the season Embiid averaged 34.7 points, which would?ve led the NBA had he qualified, 11.0 boards and nearly two blocks. The Sixers were 31-8 in games he played.

If defense wins championships I guess you have to at least consider the New York Knicks. They held opponents to an average of 108.2 points while boasting the fifth-best net rating. The Knickerbockers won 50 games for the first time since 2012-13 and only the second time this century. They are without Julius Randle, though, leaving a huge void in an already thin rotation.

Depending on the health of Donavan Mitchell, the Cleveland Cavaliers could be a sleeper. Evan Mobley and Jarrett Allan give them strong interior defense while also chipping in on the other end. Darius Garland returned from injury and averaged 18.0 points and 6.5 assists. But Mitchell hasn?t quite recovered from a knee issue that forced him to miss a number of games at the end of the season. And when he did play his numbers were well off his season averages. Without his firepower the Cavs won?t last long.

Miami won more games this season than it did last season when the Heat emerged from the play-in tournament to win the East. They upset the top two seeds betting past No. 1 Milwaukee in the first round and No. 2 Boston in the conference finals. They?re feared because of their success the last few years and Jimmy Butler always seems to pick up his game in the postseason. The core group from the 53-win team two years ago remains intact.

NCAA Tournament Most Outstanding Player Odds and Picks

There are three top contenders to win the Most Outstanding Player for the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The top two are Connecticut?s Donovan Clingan and Purdue?s Zach Edey. Each player is listed with odds of about 2-1. Connecticut?s Tristen Newton is just behind at odds of about 5-1.

Donovan Clingan +172

Connecticut is the favorite to win the NCAA Tournament and that means there are a couple of Huskies that are going to be at top of the odds board. Clingan is the overall favorite, but there is not much value in his odds at less than 2-1. He had 19 points in the first round and he had 14 points and blocked 8 shots against Northwestern in the second round. He was quiet in the Sweet 16 win but he had 22 points, 10 rebounds and five blocks in the Elite Eight win over Illinois.

Zach Edey +208

Edey has been dominant in this year?s NCAA Tournament and you can make a case he should be favored over Clingan. He is having a tourney for the ages, as he had 30 points and 21 rebounds in Purdue's win over Grambling, 23 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Utah State, 27 points and 14 rebounds in a win over Gonzaga and then he was unstoppable with 40 points and 16 rebounds in an Elite Eight win against Tennessee.

Newton was the leading scorer for Connecticut in the regular season. He wasn?t that great in the Elite Eight win but he is still the catalyst for the best team in the country and he is averaging 13.7 points, 6.7 assists, and 4 rebounds per game in the NCAA Tournament. The odds say he is a top contender, but he really should be listed with higher odds and in the dark horse category.

Dark Horses

The only real dark horse in terms of the odds is Connecticut?s Cam Spencer at odds of just over 8-1. You might be able to put NC State?s DJ Burns Jr. into the dark horse category, as his odds continue to drop but for now, we?ll put him in the longshot category. Spencer has been a key player for Connecticut in this year?s NCAA Tournament. He probably won?t win the award, as Clingan and Newton get more attention but Spencer is averaging 13.7 points, 6.5 rebounds, 3.7 assists, and 2 steals in the tournament.

Longshots

DJ Burns Jr. is the only longshot worth considering and I think he has a better chance to win the award than Spencer who has much lower odds. Burns opened up with odds of up to 30-1 at some places but his odds are now just over 18-1 and dropping. NC State is this year?s Cinderella story and they are not without a chance to win it all. Burns has been a catalyst for the Wolfpack, as he had 29 points in the win over Duke. Burns is averaging 18.2 points, 5 rebounds, and 3.5 assists in the NCAA Tournament. If NC State is to win the title, he will have to be a major factor in slowing down Purdue?s Zach Edey and then likely Connecticut?s Donovan Clingan. None of the other longshots are worth considering other than Burns.

Most Outstanding Player Picks

I think Connecticut is the best team, but there is no value in taking Clingan and I don?t think Newton or Spencer wins the award. I think Edey could win the award even if Purdue loses, as long as the Boilermakers are in the title game and Edey plays well. It should be noted, however, that the MVP winner normally comes from the team that wins the title. There has not been a Most Outstanding Player from a non-title team since 1983. If NC State can somehow win two more games as a big underdog, then taking Burns to win the award does have some value.

NCAA Tournament Final Four Odds - Bet on College Basketball

After two weeks of intense action the NCAA Tournament is down to the Final Four with the National Semifinals taking place on Saturday, April 6. The No. 1 ranked team in the country and the NCAA futures favorite Connecticut Huskies steamrolled their way to the Final Four winning their four games by an average of nearly 28 points. They are a negative odds favorite to win their second straight NCAA Championship but first must get by Alabama. The Crimson Tide already knocked off one No. 1 seed beating North Carolina, 89-87, in the Sweet 16.

Half of the Final Four is comprised of No. 1 seeds with the Purdue Boilermakers reaching the third weekend of the Tournament. After getting bounced out of last year?s Tournament by a No. 16 seed, Purdue is looking to follow the path laid out by Virginia. In 2018 the Cavaliers were the first No. 1 seed to lose to a 16-seed but came back the following season to win the title. Purdue is two wins away from duplicating that with Cinderella North Carolina State standing in the way. The only reason why NC State?s odds are shorter than Alabama?s is because the Pack doesn?t play UConn in the semis. But history isn?t on their side since a No. 11 seed has never reached the National Championship game.

It?s hard not to go with UConn as a repeat national champion. The Huskies have been dominant all season and in the Tournament when the competition is supposedly stronger, they?ve been just as good if not better. There closest game was a 17-point win over Northwestern in the second round and it wasn?t even that close. The Huskies led by 22 at half and coasted over the final 20 minutes. Also, two of their victories were by at least 30 points. That isn?t too alarming, though, since the Huskies boasted the second-best point differential during the season at +17.

In a rematch of last year?s National Championship game the Huskies demolished San Diego State, 82-52, in the Sweet 16. And when it looked like Illinois was going to be a tough out, the Huskies caught fire turning a tie game into a rout by scoring 30 consecutive points.

To have any chance of winning a title Alabama will have to rely on the nation?s highest scoring offense. The Tide averages over 90 points and is just a tick under that in the Tournament. If they can?t score the likelihood of a short stay is good since their defensive rating is 306th in the country. Mark Sears averages 21.5 points and makes 43.4 percent of his triples.

Purdue boasts perhaps the best player in the country and the Boilermakers are playing with a chip on their shoulder after an embarrassing first round exit last year. They were the second No. 1 seed ever to lose to a No. 16 seed and that carried over. Zach Edey stuck around for another year to chase the ring as did several of his teammates, and if they don?t win the title, they will always be remembered for their loss to Fairleigh Dickinson as a 23.5-point favorite.

Edey has been as good if not better than the previous season when he was tabbed the National Player of the Year. He leads the nation averaging 25 points and is second with 12.2 rebounds per contest. He?s received plenty of support with Braden Smith, Lance Jones and Fletcher Loyer all averaging double figures. And the starting five has been together for all 37 games this season giving the Boilermakers an edge in team chemistry.

All those fans rooting for the underdog have a great story in NC State. The Pack closed the regular season at 17-14 following four straight losses and wasn?t considered a threat to win the ACC tournament. They caught fire at the best time winning five games in five days to capture the league?s automatic bid and continuing that run through the Dance. If the Pack becomes the first double-digit seed to reach the championship game you can bet DJ Burns Jr. will have a hand in it. He scored 21 of his 29 points in the second half to beat Duke in the Elite 8 with an array of low post moves.

Let?s face it the guys make too much money playing in the NBA to risk injury in a tournament that?s not very highly regarded by U.S. standards. In addition to a number of NBA starts declining an invitation, the team recently saw James Harden, Anthony Davis, Damian Lillard and Bradley Beal withdraw their names. This isn?t the star-studded group we?ve seen in past competitions and the odds are likely to increase over the coming weeks as roster movement is fluid.

Of the players currently on the roster, only one ? Kemba Walker ? was an All-NBA pick last season. Walker and Khris Middleton were the only All-Stars, and only Walker, Julius Randle and Donovan Mitchell scored more than 20 points per game last NBA season. One area this group can be special is on defense. With Gregg Popovich coaching, you know Team USA is going to be strong, but can it topple the field for a third straight time?

Serbia +325

They are the second favorite for a reason. With an abundance of NBA talent and fiery national team stars, the Serbs might have the best chance of upsetting the Americans if and when they play. Nikola Jokic is the centerpiece of the squad, but Bogdan Bogdanovich, Nemanja Bjelica and Milos Teodosic can all fill it up. Playing in a group with Angola, the Phillippines and Italy, shouldn?t offer much resistance, but there are few easy outs in this tournament.

The Spaniards aren?t as deep as Team USA and Serbia, but they have a strong cast of starters. Pau Gasol, a mainstay on the national team, is out with an injury, but toss in his brother Marc, Ricky Rubio and the Hernangomez brothers, and you have a potent group. A few big names won?t be playing when Serge Ibaka and Nikola Mirotic backed out of the games, and that?s a huge loss for a team without much depth.

France +3005

Much like Spain, France has a definite NBA feel at the top of the roster but lacks depth the deeper you go. Rudy Gobert is the biggest name on the national team and he?s been the team?s ambassador leading up to the games. Gobert made a name for himself at the last FIBA World Cup with his defensive prowess helping France win its only medal in the history of the tournament. Now an established NBA veteran, he?ll be flanked by Nicolas Batum and Evan Fournier to give the French balance in the starting five.

Greece +1802

Basketball is a team sport, but it certainly helps when the best player in the NBA is on your side. If you?re looking for a team to back why not throw down on Greece, which has the best all-around player in the tournament on its side. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks to the best record in the NBA last season, claiming league MVP honors along the way. They were stopped short of a Finals appearance making this another chance for Antetokounmpo to come out a winner. The hill is much tougher to climb than Spain or France, but this is a rare opportunity for
Giannis to play with his brothers Thanasis and Kostas, and that?s pretty frightening.
