ODDS ANALYSIS
Predicting an exhibition is no easy task. There are just too many variables and factors to consider. While MLB’s All-Star Game is the only one in which players give at, or very near, 100 percent effort, there are still remnants of an exhibition. Managers want to get every player in the game and starting pitchers have no impact, getting removed after a couple of innings.
The American League has won 11 of the past 15 All-Star Games with a tie mixed in, taking the last two with a 5-3 win at Target Field last year and a 3-0 shutout in 2013 at New York’s Citi Field. The National League’s three wins since 2000 came in a three-year stretch from 2010-2012 where the AL scored two runs combined.
Pitching has been dominant throughout the Major Leagues this season and with six of the last nine All-Star Games totaling seven or fewer runs, and two of the past three games won by shutout, it’s a good bet the under will prevail. Overall the NL holds a 43-39 edge with two ties.
THE ROSTERS
The All-Star Game represents the midway point in the MLB season, though every team has played more than half its games. It’s a spectacle, just like any other sport getting the game’s best to compete in what is a popularity contest. No doubt the Kansas City Royals are good, but four starters. Come on. At least there is something at stake. The winner guarantees Game 7 of the World Series will be played in that league’s ballpark.
This year’s game is loaded with the next generation of talent with around 30 players named to the team for the first time. The American League is an image of manager Ned Yost’s Royals, loaded with quality relief pitchers. Some deserving – Dellin Betances, Zach Britton, Glen Perkins – while others not so much – Kelvin Herrera, Darren O’Day, Brad Boxberger. But every team has to be represented and let’s face it, not every team has an All-Star-worthy player.
Bruce Bochy and the National League loaded up on starting pitching and could probably run four guys out there tossing a few innings each and shut down the AL’ers. But that won’t happen as both managers will try their hardest to get every player into the game. Having managers make selections to their teams gets a bit out of hand when Bochy picks his own guys in Joe Panik and Brandon Crawford while Yost adds to his already Royals dominant roster. It’s time to get that rule off the books.
ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION
Suffice to say both teams are loaded with quality pitching and hitting, that’s usually the case when you get the best players in the game. The lineups are well known and always changing even on the final day of play before the break when the NL’s Max Scherzer and AL’s Sonny Gray both started for their club and were ruled out. In steps Clayton Kershaw for the NL and Hector Santiago for the AL, both deserving, even if they are the last players added to the game.
Great American Ball Park is considered a good hitter’s park, giving an edge to the offensive players in the game. But it is the Reds’ pitching staff dealing in the yard, so take that for what it’s worth. With so many quality players on both sides, are we likely to see some offensive fireworks or shut down pitching? Both teams are capable of both, but as the old adage goes, good pitching stops good hitting. And there is plenty of good pitching.
