Mets struggling with Niese on the hill, host Giants Thursday on MLB Network

ODDS ANALYSIS

The Giants have been a solid play on the road all season and started their road trip taking two of three games in Philadelphia moving to 16-12 in away games up 4.89 units. The Giants are also strong on the over in away games, playing all three in Philly above the scoreline with the over at 8-2 in their last 10 and 18-8-2 overall while going 3-0-1 in Tim Lincecum’s last four road starts.

The Mets have been kind to bettors when playing at Citi Field entering the series with a 21-8 home record in the black 11.99 units. But they’ve struggled with Jonothan Niese on the bump winning just once in his last eight starts with the over at 4-0-1 in his last five.

PITCHING MATCHUP

Tim Lincecum (6-3, 3.29 ERA) was tagged for four runs and five hits in six innings but recorded his sixth win of the season Friday in Philadelphia. He didn’t win his sixth game last year until his 16th start, which happened to be his second no-hitter. He has experienced mixed success in June compiling a 15-13 career record for the month.

Lincecum is 2-0 with a 1.50 ERA and 28 strikeouts in 18 innings over three career starts at Citi Field but hasn’t pitched there since April 23, 2012.

Jonathon Niese (3-6, 4.43 ERA) yielded three runs in six innings and struck out eight Friday against the Diamondbacks. He beat out Dillon Gee for a rotation spot when the Mets shrunk their six-man rotation back to five. Now he needs to prove it was the right decision; despite a quality outing in Arizona, he holds a 7.96 ERA over his last five starts.

Niese has been good in his career against the Giants with a 2.98 ERA over 42 innings but has just a 1-3 record in seven appearances – six starts.

QUOTE TO NOTE

“You go back to where he was 13 months ago. There were discussions about sending him back to the minor leagues. He was struggling with his command, he wasn’t getting anybody out. And a year later he’s in my opinion one of the top relievers in all of baseball, so his growth and development has been off the charts.” – Mets manager Terry Collins on closer Jeurys Familia

LIVE BETTING or SITUATIONAL BETTING

The Mets have placed several players on the disabled list this season and have yet to return two to the active roster. That could all change during this series. New York is hopeful Travis d’Arnaud and Dilson Herrera will rejoin the club during its series with the Giants. Both were scheduled to play rehab games for Triple-A Las Vegas and barring a setback will be on the roster this week. D’Arnaud, the Mets starting catcher, was off to a blazing start hitting .317 with a pair of home runs before breaking his right pinkie finger and missing the past seven weeks. Herrera, meanwhile, gives the club more infield options and will likely return to his position at second base.

PROP TALK

Behind Buster Posey the San Francisco Giants have the best hitting team on the road in baseball, entering the series at New York with a .287 mark following three double-digit hit games in Philadelphia. Posey had four hits in the Phillies series, including his ninth home run of the season, and hits 30 points higher with six of his nine homers coming on the road. His lifetime .340 average in 25 games against the Mets has helped keep his career average above .300 while he’s also had success against Jonathon Niese with seven hits, including a homer and 1.032 OPS, in 19 at-bats. Look for Buster to bust out with a couple of hits.

ANALYSIS AND PREDICTION

The Giants are one of the better offensive clubs on the road while the Mets’ pitching staff owns a sparkling ERA throwing in their yard. Something has to give in this one. San Francisco catches a break going against the Mets’ struggling No. 5 starter Jonothan Niese, who has to be thinking about where he might end up in a few weeks with the club shopping both him and Dillon Gee in an attempt to reduce the number of arms in the starting rotation. Niese hasn’t done much to improve his value, giving up better than 11 hits per nine innings with a 4.43 ERA. The Giants have no such worries and take care of business.
